Two business assets you need to make sure you own

Today I have a simple message for you and something I want you to always keep in mind when it comes to your website and your domain name (your www. name), which are two of your most important business assets.

There’s no need to have extra fluff here; I’ll cut right to the chase.

Your website domain and your website should be owned by YOU.

Not the person who built your website and not a domain management company, but you.

You should know the login credentials and be able to access the backend of these biz assets.

You should be able to add and take off administrators on the account.

You should be able to manage what we call “DNS settings” which are incredibly important for many things; your website, your domain email, your email marketing software… all of it.

Your credit card should be paying for those assets (and you should therefore own and have access to them).

These are two VERY important pieces of real estate in your business that you should never give away ownership of.

If you work with a company that wants to manage your assets, always make sure that YOU are the account owner of everything and that you have all of the login information.

Otherwise, you are giving up ownership of two very important business assets, especially your domain name, which is one of a kind.

While this may seem like a *duh* moment, I have heard too many stories from folks who can't access their own websites/domains and need to call an outside company, email an account manager, etc. before they can have access. (Huge red flag 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩)

If you don't own your assets, your homework is to get on that.

Need help? Here’s a script you can use to send as an email to whoever it is that you need to contact:

Subject: Request for Access to My Domain: [YourDomainName.com]

Dear [Domain Manager's Name],

I hope this email finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I am the owner of the domain [YourDomainName.com], which I currently have registered and pay for through your services.

I'm writing to request admin access to my domain. Despite being the registered owner and having up-to-date payment information on file, I've been unable to access the domain management console.

Could you please:

  1. Provide me with the necessary login credentials, or

  2. Reset my access and send verification to my email: [your email address]

I've attached proof of ownership, including my most recent payment receipt for the domain registration dated [date of payment].

I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter as I have time-sensitive updates that need to be implemented on my website. I'd greatly appreciate a response by [date - generally 2-3 business days from now].

Thank you for your assistance in resolving this issue.

Best regards,

[Your Full Name] [Your Phone Number] [Your Email Address]

Domains are one-of-a-kind. Own yours.
