How to use the copyright symbol on your website

You may have noticed that inside the footer of websites, you will see the copyright symbol (©), usually with the business name and the year attached to it. If you’ve ever wondered how to do this on your own website, I’ll give you the lowdown here.

Table of Contents

My background and knowledge of the copyright symbol (©)

My knowledge of this comes from my favorite legal document template shop, @creativelawshop (if you do choose to shop there for your legal needs, LEX10 will get you 10% off any of their contracts!

Anyway, let’s talk about the copyright symbol (©).

What the copyright symbol (©) means

To put it simply, it means that you own the content on your website and you don’t want other people to use/take your content as their own.

How to add the copyright symbol (©) symbol to your website and update it yearly

You need to have the © symbol (copy and paste it from a google search or this blog post), the year, and your company name. This needs to be updated yearly. I would put it in the footer of your website, where your privacy policy/terms and conditions are linked.

How to organize it (either work perfectly)

The way that you organize the copyright symbol (©) and the text around it matters. You can choose to use either of these arrangements:

    • © 2025, Lex Lancaster Creative Co., LLC.

    • © 2018-2025, Lex Lancaster Creative Co., LLC.

2025 is this year. If the year when you read this is 2026, 2027, etc. then of course use the current year.

How to update the copyright symbol:

Once you put it on your website the first time, all you’ll need to do in years thereafter is change it to the current year.

    Your to-do list

My suggestion is to put this to-do in your calendar for Jan 1 (set a quick reminder that recurs yearly) so you'll always have your website © details up-to-date for the current year.

If you don’t have the © symbol on your website at all yet? Add it. It’s super simple, follow the protocol linked above.
